Haldex Servicing & Repair

If you drive a 4×4 from the VAG range (Audi, VW, Seat & Skoda), Volvo and others it’s likely that it uses the Haldex 4WD system, and this should have its Haldex oil and filter changed regularly. The dealers do not supply a filter and will actually tell you there isn’t one as they cannot see it on their parts list, Nev'll Fix It can supply this as part of a service kit.

Haldex oil is a specialist oil, designed to encourage friction between the surfaces of the multi-plate clutch setup. But this friction causes particles of friction material to build up within the oil which contaminates the oil and filter. When this happens, over time, the Haldex unit will become ineffective, or even stop working altogether, which leads to expensive repairs. In extreme cases, a completely new unit may be required, which will cost a four-figure sum.

Dealers recommend a Haldex oil service every 20,000 miles for older models Gen 1,2,3 and 4, and every 10,000 miles for newer Gen 5 models. The newest models (Gen 5) are manufactured without a filter which makes this service even more vital to avoid the pump strainer becoming blocked.

Nev'll Fix It can offer this service, we are also able to offer ECU repair or replacement and Haldex overhauls should the worst happen so give us a call with your registration and chassis number and we’ll give you a fixed price quote for your Haldex oil service.

Rear Differential Unit

  • If you have a Haldex four-wheel-drive car, it is good practice to replace the ‘final drive’ rear differential oil, as it has a completely separate oil bath to the ‘Haldex’ part of the four-wheel-drive system.
  • VW/Audi have always quoted this as being a ‘lifetime’ fluid, however as a specialist and seeing these fail prior to this – we recommend the oil is changed at intervals of around 75,000
